The
mandate of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) is to
examine requests for inclusion of any class of citizens as a backward
class in the lists and hear complaints of over-inclusion or
under-inclusion of any backward class in such lists and tender such
advice to the Central Government as it deems appropriate as per Section
9(1) of the NCBC Act, 1993.
2048 castes/sub-castes/communities have been included in the Central List of OBCs based on advice tendered by NCBC since its inception.
Both the National Commission for Backward Classes and National Commission for Scheduled Castes have all the powers of a Civil Court trying a suit.
The NCBC has achieved its objectives to a great extent since it has been functioning as per its mandate laid down in the NCBC Act, 1993.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Sudarshan Bhagat in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha here today.
